Always passionate about creating, I followed my heart to art school at the early age of 16. Five years later I graduated with distinction, a Bachelor of Fine Arts. As a sculpture major, finding regular work upon completing my degree was somewhat complicated! I found work in childcare, and began looking at childrens’ books in my spare time. With such strong happy memories of being read to as a child leading to a passion for literature, I began to take great pleasure in reading good picture books to young children. Soon, visiting book stores began to overtake my desire to visit galleries, and it wasn’t long before I found myself drawing pictures of people and animals whenever I was out and about – photographing and drawing a myriad of details in the world around me. Stories grew, and I began to write and illustrate my own material.
Books can bring such joy. From the sharing of a story between an adult and a child, to getting lost in one all by yourself. I love the play between words and pictures. The way words plant a seed which is brought to life by the visual tale. The more I have found pleasure in reading good childrens’ books, the stronger my desire to be a part of making them has become.
I was offered my first picture book contract, Finding Monkey Moon, (written by Elizabeth Pulford), the same day that I found out I was pregnant with twins! The following few years were a blur of babies and paint brushes.
My girls are now 3 years old, and it was a magical day that we opened the parcel containing the completed hardcover book. Snuggled together on the couch, I shared the story with them for the first time. Watching their faces as they were held in suspense, then their relief as the story resolved gave me such joy.
It is wonderful to have the opportunity to contribute to an industry that brings so much light to the lives of both children and adults.
